Our Story

Jack Gamble enlisted for duty in World War II at age 23. He served with the 24th Battalion of the NZ Army Corps between 1940 and 1945. His contributions, and those of his fellow servicemen, live on inside the café courtesy of a large mural that takes pride of place on the walls. Jack was captured by the Germans at Tobruk, shortly after the photo was taken. Ron Brown is also a large part of this exciting new addition to the Kotara Homemakers precinct. He was a family man, a father, grandfather and husband, who loved ballroom dancing. He is also remembered daily through the name of the café.

Jack and Ron were the grandfathers of café owners Michael and Sarah Boyd, and the café name was borne from these family ties. Michael and Sarah wanted the name to mean something – and by any assessment, they’ve delivered a wonderful tribute to people who’ve meant so much to them. You’ve got to admit that the name of the café rolls off the tongue very easily. And beyond the name, Gamble and Brown stands out as a stylish and classy café: the décor has been described as simple yet sophisticated. Local interior designer Wendy Hamonet, of WH Design, assisted them with the fit out of the space. The 3 metre long display cabinet was Michael’s brainchild and taste buds are certainly tantalised on entering the café. Sarah’s arrangement skills are second to none. Presentation is A1. And the food and coffee cater for all tastes.
